I couldn’t reach the network to re-verify links in this session (web tools and curl were both blocked), so I’ve limited citations to long-standing institutional URLs I’m confident in: Instagram’s own policy and ranking posts, the Instagram Help Center, Meta’s transparency report, the Meta developer docs, the FTC press release and eCFR text for 16 CFR Part 465, and a DOI link to a peer-reviewed paper.

“Non-drop followers” is a seller’s term, not an Instagram one. It means purchased followers that the vendor promises will not disappear, usually because the panel refills them after Instagram removes the fake accounts behind them. Their impact on engagement and analytics is almost entirely negative: they raise the follower count while adding no likes, comments, saves, shares or DMs, so engagement rate falls in direct proportion to how many you buy. They also corrupt every audience report in Instagram Insights, poison any ad audience built from your followers, and put the account in breach of Instagram’s Community Guidelines. In the United States, buying them has been a federal rule violation since October 2024.

What “non-drop” actually means

Instagram removes inauthentic accounts continuously and has done so publicly since its 2018 announcement on removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments generated by third-party apps. When a batch of bought followers gets caught, the count drops. That is the “drop.”

A “non-drop” guarantee does not mean the accounts are real or that Instagram leaves them alone. It means the vendor tops you back up, typically for 30 to 365 days, from the same pool of bot or hijacked accounts. Meta reports acting on hundreds of millions of fake accounts per quarter in its Community Standards Enforcement Report, so the refill cycle is permanent. Pricing we have seen quoted to clients runs from roughly a dollar to the low tens of dollars per thousand, depending on how “high quality” the fake profiles look. None of the tiers interact with content.

How they change your engagement rate

Engagement rate is interactions divided by followers (or by reach, depending on the tool). Bought followers add to the denominator and nothing to the numerator. The math is simple:

Scenario Followers Interactions per post Engagement rate
Real audience only 10,000 200 2.0%
Plus 20,000 non-drop followers 30,000 200 0.67%
Plus 90,000 non-drop followers 100,000 200 0.2%

Instagram does not publish a single “engagement rate” input to its ranking, but it has repeatedly said that feed ranking depends on how likely each viewer is to interact, based on that person’s history with you. Its 2023 ranking explainer and the earlier 2021 post from Adam Mosseri both describe per-user interaction predictions. Fake followers never open the app, so they never generate those signals. The result we see on client accounts is that reach to followers flattens or declines while the follower number climbs, and the account’s reach-to-follower ratio becomes a visible red flag to anyone who checks.

What they do to Instagram Insights

Insights is built from the behaviour of the accounts that follow and view you. Bulk inactive accounts distort every report:

  • Audience demographics. Top cities and countries fill up with places the business has never served. We audited a regional US restaurant group whose Insights showed its two largest cities were on other continents.
  • Most active times. The “followers online” chart is skewed toward the time zones of the bot farms, so scheduling posts by that chart puts content live when real customers are asleep.
  • Follower growth. The follows and unfollows graph shows sawtooth spikes from refills and purges that hide genuine growth or churn.
  • Views and reach. Instagram moved to views as its primary metric across posts, Reels and Stories in late 2024 and has deprecated the old impressions metric in the Instagram Platform Insights API. Views per follower is now the easiest ratio for a sponsor or agency to compute, and bought followers make it collapse.

The damage spreads beyond Instagram. If you run Meta ads and build a lookalike audience from your followers or engagers, the seed is contaminated and the ads are optimised toward people who resemble bots.

Can brands and sponsors tell?

Yes, and quickly. Peer-reviewed detection work such as Cresci et al.’s “Fame for sale” study of purchased followers showed that simple profile features (no posts, no profile photo, extreme follow ratios, creation-date clusters) identify bought followers with high accuracy. Commercial influencer-vetting tools apply the same logic and give sponsors a fake-follower percentage before any contract is signed.

From the production side: when we pitch a sponsor on behalf of a creator, the first thing the brand’s agency does is pull an audience-quality report. An account showing more than roughly a fifth of followers as suspicious generally gets passed over regardless of the content quality, and the creator never learns why.

Is it against the rules?

Instagram’s Community Guidelines prohibit artificially collecting likes, followers or shares, and enforcement ranges from removing the fake accounts to restricting or disabling the buyer’s account. Since 21 October 2024, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials also bans buying or selling fake indicators of social media influence, including followers and views, when they misrepresent influence for a commercial purpose. The text is in 16 CFR Part 465, and violations carry civil penalties per violation. A business account buying “non-drop” followers to look established to customers or sponsors falls squarely within it.

What to do if the account already has them

Stop the refills first; the vendor’s guarantee is the thing keeping the fake count propped up. Then export the current Insights so you have a dated baseline and can explain the coming drop to anyone who watches the numbers. For accounts where fakes are a minority, let Instagram’s purges run and rebuild engagement rate with content aimed at the real segment. For accounts where fakes are the majority, we have had better results starting a new handle than trying to clean the old one, because the audience data on the old account is unusable for strategy either way. Measure recovery by views per follower and saves per post rather than by follower count.
