To remove background noise from a video, separate the audio, run a noise-reduction pass in a free or built-in tool, then re-sync and export. For constant noise such as hum, fan or air conditioning, the Noise Reduction effect in Audacity or the DeNoise filter in DaVinci Resolve removes 10 to 20 dB cleanly in under five minutes. For traffic, room echo or chatter, AI tools such as Adobe Podcast Enhance, Resolve’s Voice Isolation or iZotope RX do far better. Expect good results in 15 minutes and perfect results never: fix it at the source next time.

How do I do it for free in Audacity?
- Export the audio from your editor as WAV, or open the video file directly in Audacity (it accepts most MP4 and MOV files with FFmpeg support installed).
- Select one to two seconds of noise only, with no speech. Open Effect, Noise Reduction, and click Get Noise Profile.
- Select the whole clip and reopen the effect. Start at 12 dB reduction, sensitivity 6, frequency smoothing 3. Preview, then apply.
- Export as 48 kHz WAV, drop it back in your timeline, and align it to the original waveform.
Pushing reduction above 20 dB produces the metallic, underwater artifact that gives away cheap processing. Two gentle passes beat one aggressive one. The Audacity Noise Reduction manual documents each parameter.
What about inside Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut?
Every current editor has a one-click option. In DaVinci Resolve 18 and later, open the Fairlight page, select the clip and enable Voice Isolation in the inspector, or add the Noise Reduction FX. Blackmagic describes both on its Fairlight page, and Voice Isolation is included in the free version. Premiere Pro’s Essential Sound panel offers DeNoise and DeReverb sliders plus Enhance Speech, the same model behind Adobe Podcast Enhance, which processes files up to one hour free in a browser. Final Cut Pro ships Voice Isolation under Audio Enhancements.
Set the AI tools to 50 to 70 percent strength rather than 100. Full strength removes room tone entirely, and a voice with no room behind it sounds synthetic.
How do production companies handle it?
On a corporate interview or commercial shoot we treat noise reduction as a fallback, not a workflow. The order of operations that works:
- Record 30 seconds of room tone at every location. It is the noise profile and the fill for edits.
- Lavalier within 20 cm of the mouth or a shotgun just out of frame. Halving mic distance roughly doubles signal relative to room noise.
- Kill the sources. Fridge off, HVAC off, phones in airplane mode, crew outside.
- Spectral repair for events such as a door slam or cough, using iZotope RX. Broadband reduction cannot fix a single transient without smearing everything around it.
- Loudness last. Normalize to the EBU R128 target of -23 LUFS for broadcast, or -14 to -16 LUFS for web and social.
Can I batch it from the command line?
Yes. FFmpeg’s afftdn filter runs FFT-based denoising on hundreds of files unattended:

Why does the result still sound wrong?
Three causes account for most complaints. The noise was not constant, so a single profile cannot model it; use an AI tool instead. The reduction was too strong, producing warbling artifacts; back it off to 10 to 12 dB. Or the problem is reverb, not noise, and no denoiser touches reflections. De-reverb tools help but cannot restore clarity lost to a tiled room. If the dialogue is worth it, rerecord the lines as voiceover and sync them, which is routine practice in commercial post.
