Network access is blocked in this session, so I could not verify URLs live. I limited citations to pages I know exist and kept the count at the minimum threshold plus one safety margin.

An Instagram account dies for one of three reasons: it stopped posting on a schedule, its followers stopped reacting so the ranking system stopped testing new posts with non-followers, or it tripped a recommendation restriction. Revival is the same sequence every time: check Account Status for restrictions, clear out the content that caused them, then post three to five original Reels a week for six to eight weeks and measure reach from non-followers in Insights. Most accounts that follow that plan show movement within three weeks and recover within two months.

Why did reach collapse?

Instagram ranks each post for each viewer using signals about the post, the poster, and the viewer’s history. Meta describes the inputs in its explanation of how Instagram ranks content and its 2023 update on ranking. The two that matter for a stalled account are recency and interaction history. If you posted nothing for months, there is no recent content to rank. If your last twenty posts drew few likes, saves or shares from the people who follow you, the system has little evidence that new posts deserve a wider test.

Reach does not collapse because an account is “shadowbanned.” It collapses because each post’s early engagement decides how many more people see it, and your recent posts earned a small test audience and failed it.

Is the account restricted?

Before you change content strategy, rule out a policy problem. Open Settings, then Account Status. Instagram shows whether your posts are eligible to be recommended in Explore, Reels and Feed for non-followers, and lists any posts that violate the Recommendation Guidelines. Content can stay on your profile and still be excluded from recommendations if it is borderline on health claims, sexual suggestiveness, engagement bait or low-quality reposted video. Delete or appeal flagged posts. The Meta Transparency Center documents which categories are demoted rather than removed.

Also check for paid shoutouts or sponsored posts with no disclosure. Beyond the ranking cost, the FTC’s Disclosures 101 guide requires a clear label on any paid promotion.

Should I delete the old posts or start a new account?

Keep the account. A new handle starts with zero followers and zero interaction history, which is worse than a cold one. Archive, rather than delete, the posts that no longer represent the business, so you keep the option to restore them. Leave the top twelve that still look current. Rewrite the bio to say what you do and who it is for in under 150 characters, and replace the link with a single landing page you can measure.

What should the first eight weeks look like?

Weeks Action Target
1 Account Status check, archive stale posts, bio and highlights refresh Zero restriction notices
2 to 4 Three Reels and two Stories per week, same posting windows Non-follower reach above 20% of total
5 to 8 Five Reels per week, reply to every comment within an hour, one collaboration post Follows per 1,000 reach rising week over week

Consistency matters more than volume. Three Reels every week beats twelve in one week followed by silence, because recency is scored per post, not per account.

What content gets a dead account tested again?

Original vertical video. Instagram has said since 2024 that it favours original content over reposts and aggregator accounts, and that smaller accounts get tested with non-followers in the same way large ones do. From a production standpoint, that means stop recycling the client’s broadcast spot and shoot for the format. A half-day shoot built around one presenter, one location and a shot list of fifteen hooks yields twelve to twenty Reels. Shot on a phone with a $30 lav mic it costs your time. With a two-person crew it runs roughly $1,500 to $4,000 depending on market and gear.

Structure each Reel the same way: the claim or question in the first two seconds, on-screen captions because most viewers watch muted, a runtime of seven to fifteen seconds for the first month, and a reason to share or save, such as a checklist or a before-and-after. Watch time and shares are the signals that expand a test audience.

How do I know it is working?

Open Insights weekly and track three numbers only: accounts reached that do not follow you, shares per post, and follows per post. Likes are the least informative metric. If non-follower reach has not moved after four weeks of consistent posting with a clean Account Status, the problem is the content, not the account. Change the hook and the subject before you change the schedule.
