In this module, we'll look at some basic principles of filmmaking, explore what makes a good film, and learn how to get the most out of our mobile devices. From idea generation to development, producing a production plan, shooting and editing, this module will guide you through the process of making your film, from start to finish. Shooting with an iPhone has its challenges, but good quality images can be achieved by following some basic instructions and adding additional equipment. Suggested uses for iPhone. Piece to the camera. Filming people/interviews. Try to frame the person as a head and shoulders with eyes one third of the way up the screen. This will provide an element of continuity in the assembly. The main problems with user-generated movies are: Poor quality audio. Faces out of focus/face too dark. Footage shot in portrait mode. A 5 minute iPhone video (at 30MB/s) will be a 1GB file (200MB/min). A fully charged iPhone will film between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on conditions.
The external microphone helps eliminate background noise by picking up audio directly in front of it, not around it. The selfie stick is a surprisingly useful piece of kit, as it provides multiple ways to get steady shots. It can be used as a monopod and even as a base crane for capturing vox-pops style images. Cable Rode SC6 – Connect 2 microphones to an iPhone. Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod (£20). It can also be used as a light stand grip. The Olloclip lens (£70) provides clip-on wide angle and telephoto. Osmo gimbal (£290).
Provides smooth, shake-free imaging and face tracking. Easily transfer images from your phone for editing or archiving. External power supply (e.g. Anker): keep filming all day long (and talking!). You can make simple edits on your phone, but for more complex edits, create your edit on the largest device you have available (iPad, laptop or desktop). If you are Mac based then use the free iMovie app as it is very user friendly and intuitive. Alternatively, there are many free PC apps you can use, such as HitFilm (Express) to transfer images to a computer.
An iPhone to USB flash drive is a great way to store footage and free up storage space while shooting. This also allows you to copy it to another Apple device (or PC/Mac) for editing. To add a more professional touch to your videos, why not order an animated intro/outro? These short clips can be created using your Company branding and then inserted into your edit to complement your video.
